This series reflects on the lived experience of an empath, isolated during lockdown. Working from home has established a strong, virtually connected society; whilst mental health has been neglected. Tangible and sticky, clay remains the abundant material that underpins his endurance. Each form is inspired by the empath’s limited surroundings and the landscapes of neighbourhood.
Merging location, he collects scattered found materials. Processed. Crushed. Rocks become amalgamated into the sculptures. Surfaces captured in motion; the empath reveals his dialect. A subtle encrypted code expressing emotions that were once hoarded. Now conveyed.
How can I share thoughts with another,
whilst longing for freedom day?
Evaluating reality,
a natural trait disappearing.
How I yearn to embrace.

A series of sculptures each obtaining distinct emotional surface qualities in response to lockdown. Amidst a virtually connected society, it has become vital to balance our mental health now more than ever. It is important to re-build a community as lockdown has shattered the sense of known in lifestyles and impacted on emotional well-being. By using surface textures, it can help rebuild a community by sharing our emotional experiences through clay.
Earlier this year, I facilitated ‘Reunite to Consciousness’ an online workshop which involved a series of sessions on ways to explore emotions through mark making. I collected these surface treatments and experiences as a catalyst of primary research to initiate my artistic interpretations. My sculptures that are inspired by amorphic emotions are decorated in warm earthy tones, and integrate the personal hidden within modern minimalism.

Statement
The ethos of Reunite to Consciousness involved a series of workshops, that focused on the relationship between emotional expression and surface treatment. Reunite to Consciousness was run for four weeks, hosted on Zoom and was available for the ceramic community at Central Saint Martins (CSM), and Ceramic UK; an online page available to ceramic artists in the UK.
I collected surface treatments and experiences to use them as a catalyst of primary research to initiate my artistic interpretations in my later project 'Indefinite Sensibility'.
